The View from the Top of the World

About six hours ago, sitting comfortably in a brand new Air-Canada Airplane, I had a sensation that I can only describe as that of feeling on top of the world (both literally and figuratively speaking). The implications of what was about to happen to me finally began to sink in-- I was finally off on another adventure! After finishing my first four months at Quest University I was headed south for a week in Brazil with my good friend from India, Mariana, and then over to Argentina for two months of Spanish immersion with thirty other Quest students. It didn't, however, feel entirely real until the captain announced that we would be landing shortly, the cloud cover began to part and I looked out the window and saw THE BRAZILIAN RAINFOREST! For the rest of the "pousando" (landing in portugese) I stared out the window with an overwhelming sense of awe-- how could anyone want to destroy this! Soon however, all thoughts of the rainforest began to dissapear as the familiar scramble to be the first person off the Airplane began. Apparently this ridiculous phenomenon is cross-cultural.
When I got off the plane I was struck by the humidity, the heat and of course the infamous brazilian beauties (in that order). The consequences of these three things hit me shortly thereafter. I took a shower almost two hours ago and I am still sitting on Mariana's bed in front of a mirror wondering if my hair will dry before it reaches it's typical tropical climate poodle-like shape, or will that happen after it dries. Mariana, one of said Brazilian beauties, has little sympathy as her long black hair seems to dry in perfect loose waves regardless of what she does to it. Despite the state of the small dog on my head I am excited to be here. Let the adventure begin.
